Question:
Audition for a school play?
2009-08-15 07:22:48 UTC
This fall my school will be having auditions for Fiddler on the Roof. It double casts because there are two performances, so two people get each role. I will be auditioning for Hodel. I have a few questions?

1.. Well, there's one person who I'm pretty sure can get the part. How do I give myself an edge over her?
2.. What are some tips for acting that part?
3.. Me and my best friend both are auditioning for the same part?
4. The song, Far From the Home I Love, which I have to sing, is pretty much good for my voice, but for some reason my C and D don't sound as good, but any note above or below that does. And the notes C and D repeat a lot. What should I do??
5. How to give the audition my best?

Thanks, I'm really nervous about this audition, because this is my favorite show, and I really don't want to mess up. I've gotten big parts before, but for some reason I have a hunch that this time, I might not.

But thanks again!

1. Know the show by heart and shape your audition so you act exactly how you think Hodel should. When you audition you are basically advertising your ability to play the part. Remember that when you plan your audition. Don't even think about the other person, think about you.

2. Research Hodel and decide beforehand how you think Hodel should act. Youtube is a great place to get ideas about characters.

3. If you are really best friends you'll support each other. This year one of my friends didn't talk to me for a month because I got the part she wanted in the school play! Make an agreement with her that if one person gets the part and the other doesn't, you'll support each other 100%

4. Practice, practice, practice. You'd be surprised how your voice can change if you just work on it. When I started getting into theater, my range was about the A below middle C to a high G. Now, my range is from the E below middle C to the D two octaves above middle C! Just work hard and you'll be able to do it!

5. Be cool an confident. Be prepared, more prepared than you think you need to be. Be so good at your audition that you can do it in your sleep. When you go in to the audition, just calm down. Take a deep breath and think about how prepared you are. Tell yourself you'll do great. Then take a deep breath and go! Use your nerves to your advantage, turn them into energy.

Good luck! You'll be great

1. You can't really have an edge over a person if they're better than you. Just do your best, be confident, and try to really put your heart into the performance and give it your all. You should be shattered by the end of the audition, that's how much you have to give.

2. Hodel's a confident young woman, she's not meek, but she's not arrogant. She's a perfect match for Perchik, she has big ideas, she just hadn't realised it before she met him, he opened her up, and she brought him back down to earth.

3. Whatever you do, don't fall out over it. When one of you gets the part, it doesn't necessarily mean that one is a better actress than the other, it just means that one of you is better for that part. Support each other all the way and be happy for each other.

4. You can't change the notes, the general philosophy in musical theatre is that if you can't sing a song in the key it was written in, then you shouldn't be singing it. You'll just have to practice the song over and over again and do your best.

5. As I said before, heart and energy, if you're clearly passionate about what you're doing, you aren't shy, and you don't do things by halves, then that's the best you can do.

Best of luck, I hope you get it. It's a great show, and even if you don't get a main part there are loads of chorus scenes, it'll be great whatever you do. Will you email me and say if you get the part or not?

1. Research the musical, research your character, be professional (not serious), but be fun. Smile and do your best. Make yourself stand out.

2. Research tips on acting that part. Look up videos on YouTube with people playing that part.

3. Make sure you don't loose your friendship over something silly like this. And if one of you get the part, congratulate the other. Keep in mind that you might both get the part...

4. Um, keep practicing. Maybe see a vocal coach if this means a lot to you.

5. Do your best, smile, think happy thoughts. Read articles on how to prepare for an audition (wikihow.com is great for that). Drink water, don't drink milk or eat any other dairy products before the audition. And practice, practice, practice!

Hope this helped.
