OK! I'm 24 and my last acting audition was 2 years ago. I didn't get the part but the casting director called me out of the blue yesterday for another audition in 3 days. At first I was thrilled and complimented. I can't believe she even remembers me! Then I quickly realized how much has changed in two years... mostly for my hairline. Last time she saw me I was more youthful looking. Full head of hair. Now I feel like a young Bill Murray. My hair is a little longer but I am going to cut it. Any suggestions on a good length? Should I get new head shots? Should I be prepared to be asked about my hair? What do casting directors think of receding hairlines. Most people who are balding in showbiz got their first job BEFORE the recession... hmm.

Anytime your appearance changes significantly, yes, you should get new headshots. As a director, I can tell you that there are very few things as disconcerting as being handed a headshot, and then seeing someone completely DIFFERENT walk in the door...!

As for this particular casting director...let's assume she didn't remember you because of your hair, but rather because you impressed her as a performer. Don't worry about the receding hairline. You should go back to her with the confidence that she'll be reminded all over again why it was that she liked your work in the first place...and, if she even notices the change in your appearance, SHE'LL also remember that its been two years since she last saw you.

p.s. -- I once toured with a very talented actor who had lost most of his hair. The guy totally made it work for him! He had two separate headshots: one of him with a (very nice) hairpiece, and one featuring his gleaming scalp! Obviously, the guy was capable of playing all sorts of looks/ages/characters. The trick is to OWN what you've got, and not "disclaim" anything.

Good luck.

if their looking for someone with a receding hairline, they think, great. if you have talent and ability

and they like you it doesn't matter they can work around that.
