I'm auditioning for the role of Mrs. Lovett in the local production of 'Sweeney Todd' and I have to find a 1-2 minute monologue and 16-32 bars of a song. Can anyone help me find a song and a monologue that depicts a cynical, dark character [yet slightly comedic] such as Mrs. Lovett [prefferably with a British accent as well] that isn't from the movie/stage play? I've always thought that showing up to an audition with prepared music from the show was a bit...desperate. Unless anyone thinks that it's a good idea? Please help! Much appreciated!!!!

I think the song As Long As He Needs Me from Oliver is good.

It fits Miss Lovett.

As for monologues, again, maybe something from Oliver. But I don't think it has much dialogue.

The Laramie Project has some great monologues but they're really sad. They don't fit Lovett very well, but they can show emotion which is a must.

You're right in not wanting to sing a song from the show - never do that unless it's specifically requested. Sweeney Todd is a Sondheim show, and his music is so distinctive in style that you should always use one of his other songs at an audition for one of his shows. So, here are some suggestions:

- The Miller's Son (A Little Night Music)

- Another Hundred People (Company)

- Could I Leave You (Follies)

- There Won't Be Trumpets (cut from Anyone Can Whistle)

i'm a director and that i might desire to tell you: each and every of the solutions won so a ways are comprehensive bunk. If somebody arrived at an audition doing a Helena Bonham Carter effect, wearing black with darkish circles under their eyes, making a track purely songs from the instruct, my instantaneous reaction may be "next!" If i'm directing a instruct, i choose to place my specific stamp on it, no longer replica another production or action picture. specific, there is completely lots you may do employing the comparable source fabric. yet assume i needed to go hi Dolly with Sweeney Todd and gown all of us in extraordinary colorings, contrasting the dreary words and track? Or assume i needed to apply purely some solid individuals, playing each and every of the jobs and track too as they did with the recent Broadway revival? additionally, i might desire to have a diverse imaginative and prescient of Mrs Lovett than you do, or Tim Burton did. i might desire to choose her fat, skinny, tall, short, ethnic, despite. in case you arrive in Lovett drag, you have no longer purely locked your self out of my imaginative and prescient of Lovett yet in addition prevented your self from being seen for one greater section. are you able to sing Joanna's songs? probable, yet darn it! - this female can purely do a cockney accessory and sounds like a tragic goth clown. Nah, she's out. you do no longer point out what your variety is, yet come across a NON-SWEENEY TODD track to sing, many times an uptempo and a ballad. you pick to instruct off your variety yet in addition to, you pick to "sell" the track. by no potential audition with a track from the instruct and don't difficulty discovering each and every of the words and track: you won't get the function and that i might desire to alter issues up. gown properly, yet no longer in character. If auditioning for a alluring function, it is okay to seem alluring, do exactly no longer arrive in a Marilyn Monroe outfit. do no longer use an accessory until asked to accomplish that, otherwise you will possibly be able to make point out of your accessory skills on your resume. Be useful yet approachable and friendly. And destroy a leg!
