Smile, wave your hands in the air, acknowledge them approvingly and say thank you, in the loudest most respectful way possible. Hold your arms out, and cross them at the forearms, and wave them back and forth - signalling that you would like silence. When you get it, smile and say thank you again.

throw a match and yell fire....lol... just kidding....just clear your throat and state ,"may I have your attention please"that usually works... of course after everyone quiets down and stands there staring at you -- you have to tell them why you asked for their attention... if you just wanted them to be a little quieter rather than make a speech etc.... you can diffuse it with a quick joke at that moment...

Start speaking. It's ingrained, we pay attention when something begins.
I once saw a speech begin with the speaker, dressed in a suit, stand at the front of the room and bang his head on the podium. He then ran to the back of the room and banged his head again. He then ran to the desk of the one student talking and banged his head on the desktop.
The speaker then walked back to the front of the now-silent room, and said "Now that I have your attention, I'd like to talk with you about the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet."

if it is at a formal party....gently tap the side of your glass. If you are addressing an audience...try "good morning" then wait for them to do die down and try again.

Well, I am a teacher by profession so I am used to being in front of large crowds, but here's what I do. I can whistle EXTREMELY loud with my two fingers and it can shut up a stadium if I had to. Trust me, you won't be embarassed...lots of people will probably thank you for shutting everyone up...so whatever works for you!!
