Yes, finally a comedy play that is a satire on "The Sound of Music". It is about a group of people in a small town that try to put on The Sound of Music with not enough people to play the parts and this is where they start to get resourceful which helps provide the comedy. It is between comedy, satire and farce throughout. Jokes that pertain to The Sound of Music. Act One is the meeting where they decide details about auditions. Act Two - the Auditions, Act Three - The Rehearsals, Act Four- The chaotic performance seen from backstage. I believe this play could do very well, even be a hit, with the right people behind it, developing it. The Sound of Music is a huge and popular thing, so a comedy that 'takes if off', may just be the ticket! People would come to this play, just because of the subject matter I believe. Snatches of music are used from the original and so there may be copywright issues but this could be overcome. Also the music is not essential to play. Anyone interested?

As Summer said before me, the folks who have the rights to Rodgers and Hammerstein's music are super, super strict. You'll definitely need to try to get their permission before using their music in this play - possibly even the title of the play or the character names and plot. If you put up the play without permission from them, you could be facing a HUGE fine, or even jailtime.

If you don't get permission from them (I kind of doubt you will, given my experiences with them in the past), as Summer also said, collaborate with a composer and a writer to create a similar play to "The Sound of Music" that is far enough from the actual play/music to avoid problems with rights. Tweak the title and character names, change little bits of the mentioned plot, ever-so-slightly adjust the music. That way it will be familiar to the audience without breaking any laws.

Good luck, it sounds funny, I just don't want you getting in trouble!

Sounds like the Curate Shakespeares As You Like It which is hilarious!

See if you can get it published, also look for theatre companies that consistantly take new works like Actors Theatre in Louisville.

FYI Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization is pretty strict with regard to licensing you might need to collaborate with a composer that can write songs which parody the music enough without violating any copyrights.

Good luck! If you do a production in California and need a Maria contact me!
